This Introductory seminar will introduce you to Microscan AutoVISION and Visionscape. The class will discuss AutoVISION software and hardware options, and then provide some hands-on practice with the emulation software. Learn how to build an inspection job and work through the AutoVISION interface, then understand how an AutoVISION inspection can be transitioned to Microscan's advanced Visionscape FrontRunner software.

The application is to provide (4) Ethernet embedded barcode readers (QX870) to verify card placement and identification in a blister pack packaging machine in a four quadrant configuration.
Capable of sending and receiving data via Ethernet protocols.
Capable of discrete I/O for triggering input, Match/Good Read output, and Mismatch/No Read output.
Capable of communicating with Host PLC over Ethernet network through an Ethernet switch.
Capable of scanning a master code with an external mounted reader, sending the data to a PLC, and the PLC sending data (match code and configuration) to the scanners embedded in the machine.
The scanners are mounted above the card plate looking down on the codes. If a card is missing from the 5 card quadrant, it gives the PLC a no read signal. This allows the operator to address the issue prior to it reaching the printhead traversing section of the machine. Since the blister equipment can see a variety of card sizes and set ups in the same card plate footprint, the QX-870 scanner gives the customer the ability to sweep an area in each quadrant looking for the barcode no matter the code's position on the card.

Barcode verification is important because it decodes a barcode and assigns grades to certain metrics of the code with a device that is traceable to a known standard. This technology has been around for a long time, like in the retail industry, to help ensure that UPC barcodes can be read by a variety of retail scanners at checkout.
Interestingly, this technology also transfers to the document handling industry. The companies that print barcodes on gift cards, coupons, etc. will also all benefit from verification. 100% verification is very important because today’s technologies are more complex and dynamic than a simple printing press.
Inkjet technology is an example. It allows customizable information including barcodes to be printed on the fly. Like when NFL shops send you a magazine and the cover shows your name printed on the back of a jersey, or a special barcode that’s linked to a discount at the mall. Also, both custom gift cards and ones you get from a carousel at the store all have been printed using inkjet or other technologies.
The downside to using inkjet is that more problems can occur, such as empty ink cartridges, belt speed changes, startups, shut downs and changeovers. These are great examples of what can cause the print quality to suffer and the barcode to potentially be unreadable. (I’m pretty sure your 15 year old niece will not be understanding if her iTunes gift card doesn’t work!)
I believe that the only way to be 100% in compliance is to inspect 100%. Advanced systems can 100% verify barcodes at the high speeds used in most printing environments. Image processing power, external lighting, integrated discrete I/O, and Ethernet-enabled devices all make this possible. This means that data can be captured and stored, reports generated, evidence of 100% compliance can be shown, and money can be saved.
And most importantly, the iTunes gift card will work every time.
