Vice President, Engineering – Renton, WA/Nashua, NH

We currently have an opening in our senior management team for a Vice President of Engineering to work in either our Renton, Washington or Nashua, New Hampshire office.
SUMMARY
Directs and coordinates activities of the entire engineering department, which consists of the New Products Engineering Group and the Engineering Services Group. Directs, coordinates, and exercises functional authority for planning, organizational control, integration, and completion of engineering projects by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate managers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- As a member of the Executive or Senior Management Team, participates in formulating and administering company policies and developing long range goals and objectives.
- Directs and coordinates activities of department or division for which responsibility is delegated to further attainment of goals and objectives.
- Reviews and analyzes activities, costs, operations, and forecast data to determine department or division progress toward stated goals and objectives.
- Confers with President and other senior management personnel to review achievements and discuss required changes in goals or objectives resulting from current status and conditions.
- Collaborates with Marketing department on technology, product, feature, and functionality requirements and develops product development roadmap which articulates how and when these needs will be delivered. Determine if product or technology should be developed or acquired. Works with Marketing to determine companies for possible partnership or acquisition.
- Assigns project personnel to specific phases or aspects of project such as product design, technical studies, preparation of specifications and technical plans, and product testing, while remaining within business/budget constraints as well as project timelines.
- Reviews product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and customer contract requirements, and related specifications.
- Provides analysis and strategy for patent development. Works to ensure new products are developed without patent infringement. Monitors market for potential infringement by others on Microscan patents.
- Coordinates activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design and test problems.
- Evaluates and approves design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
- Controls expenditures within limitations of project budget.
- Develops employees within the engineering department for succession planning purposes. Indentifies high potential and “must move” employees and puts in place development plans and action items to address.

- Prepares interim and completion project reports for senior management and/or Spectris.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages several subordinate supervisors (directors and managers) who supervise approximately 30 employees in New Products Engineering and Engineering Services. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Also directly supervises a number non-supervisory employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- 4-10 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Master's degree (M.S.) or equivalent is desired.
- Very strong written and speaking communication skills
- Willing to travel 25%-50% on a global basis
- Excellent people and management skills to interact with staff, colleagues and cross-functional teams, and third parties.
